According to Portuguese media O Jogo, Tunhag is keen to strengthen his defence. Alvaro Fernandez has been linked with a return to the Premier League after impressing for Benfica in Portugal, with Real Madrid and Barca also eyeing the Spain Under-21 international.
The 21-year-old full-back, whose contract expires in June 2029, has made seven appearances for Benfica, helping them keep three clean sheets. Fernandez has played an important role in Schmidt's side, helping Benfica rise to third place in the table at the start of the season.
He was equally crucial in the Champions League, helping the team to victories over Red Star Belgrade and Atletico Madrid.
His performances as a Spain Under-21 international have not gone unnoticed, with United reportedly one of several clubs who have been monitoring his progress.
In fact, according to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, his former club Manchester United are considering whether to activate the buy-back clause contained in his contract.
Earlier this year, United sent the left-back on loan to Benfica in January, with a buyout option worth £5m included in the deal.
Benfica decided to sign Fernndez permanently this summer, but now Dan Ashworth could bring him back to Old Trafford. O Jogo revealed that Real Madrid and Barcelona are also "keeping a close eye" on the Spanish player.
Luke Shaw and Malasia have struggled to stay fit for some time, forcing Tunhag to use Dalot or Mazzrawi at left-back.
